If you’re not getting enough clients for your consulting business, there’s a simple fix.
It’s the secret formula for getting all the clients you want for your business.
It’s really a simple formula and not really a secret, but most people, when given the formula, refuse to put it to work.
Why?
Because, while it’s very easy to understand, it takes some actual work. And it requires you to leave your comfort zone. It’s not as simple as putting an ad on Adsense or posting to your blog occasionally. While those ideas are not bad, they won’t help you build your business as fast as the following trick.
If you want more clients, MEET MORE PEOPLE.
That’s it. To get more business, you need to leave your office and get in front of as many people as possible.
Get some business cards and develop an elevator pitch (a 15-30 second way to explain clearly, enthusiastically, and concisely to anyone – not just technical folks – what you do).
And then get out and start introducing yourself (and what you do) to people.
So, where can you find new people to tell about your business after you’ve run out of family and friends? Here are a few ideas.
- Local Chamber of Commerce functions
- Networking events – Check if your city has a site like Networking Calendar. (If not, maybe you could be the first in your town to put one together.)
- Social Clubs – Toastmasters, Rotary, Lions
- User groups – Linux, Oracle, Infragard, etc
- Country clubs
- Health clubs
- Sports clubs – running, bicycling
- The golf course
- Conferences – as a speaker or an attendee
- Church
- The elevator
- Your kid’s school
- Your kid’s sporting events
- Your sporting events – sand volleyball, softball, basketball, etc
- Classes you’re taking
- Online sites like LinkedIn and Facebook
- The library
- Visiting target clients
- Bars
- Waiting in line
Make it your initial goal to introduce yourself to at least one new person every day. Make this a 30 day challenge. If you do this every day for the next 30 days, it will become easier and just may become a new habit.
Simply doing that will give you over 350 new contacts in your first year. Once you’re more comfortable, challenge yourself to increase your goal to two or three a day.
If you use this secret formula consistently, you can’t help but grow your business.
